They say that “you are what you eat”. Is almost true.

Because in fact you are not what you are eating, but what you can digest and absorb. Your digestive tract wellbeing determines your energy level, longevity, health as well as your digestion.

If you suffer from indigestion, bloating, abdominal pain or drowsiness after meals, is possible that your digestive tract is damaged - alcohol, antibiotics, food allergens and pain killers are the most common culprits. Fortunately, there are simple steps to solve this problem and rebuild your digestive tract so you can digest better and optimally absorb the nutrients.

There is a chance that you suffer from some form of food allergy, so first thing to do is to find out what you are currently allergic to with a simple home test kit that measures IgG food allergies. By avoiding your current food allergens - wheat, milk and yeast being the most common - you give your digestive system a break. The good news is that food allergies are not for life, four months of removing the allergens and healing the gut is enough to remove your sensitivity.

The next step is to take a digestive enzyme with each meal. These enzymes, called protease, amylase and lipase literally help you digest your food, and can be found in every health store. If you get an immediate release after taking enzymes you know you have a problem with digestion. If you feel bloated after lentils or beans, choose an enzyme that contains glucoamylase.

Now is time to rebuild your digestive system by feeding it with glutamine. While the rest of your body runs on glucose, your rapidly repairing digestive cells can run on this amino acid. A heaped teaspoon ideally together with other key nutrients like vitamin A and zinc, last thing at night in a glass of water can make miracles for your digestion. Do this every day for a month, or after any kind of infection, alcoholic excess or antibiotic treatment.

Also you don’t want to miss reinoculating your digestive tract with the right strains of bacteria - taking lactobacillus acidophilus and bifidus bacteria in form of capsules or powder for 30 days is all that you need to get your inner flora flourishing.

Then you may want to maintain your digestive track healthy. What damages it is too much alcohol, deep-fried food, burnt meat, coffee and wheat. Avoid them as much as you can, eating instead lots of fruits, vegetables and soluble fibres found in oats and vegetables. Drink plenty of water, and also help your digestion by chewing well your food.
